An unexpected and shameful incident occurred in a courtroom in Mexico when a judge punched two fellow justices during a court session. This courtroom incident and its follow-ups are said to have shattered the reputation of Mexico’s legal system.
Justice Miguel Angel Falcon, a senior judge of Morelos state appeals court, furiously jumps out of his chair, pushed one fellow justice, then rushed to one other fellow justice and punched him. The incident happened because Justice Falcon became irritated at fellow judge Ruben Jasso, at one point calling him “stupid,” and then was angered further when Justice Jasso accused him of insulting behavior.
Court officials said Falcon had brought shame on the legal system and a lawyer who witnessed the attack called for him to resign. The lawyer, Mr. Miguel Angel Rosete said “this man’s lack of discipline and capriciousness disrupted a serious session of the judiciary of the state of Morelos, he became a caveman judge and based on the principles of dignity and ethics, he should resign from his post”.
The court’s chief justice, Justice Nadia Lara Chavez, said: “We are very ashamed that such a thing could happen in a high appeals court. There are some people who just do not have the tolerance to accept certain comments.”
Meanwhile, Justice Falcon apologized for his actions, “I feel sadness, shame and regret. And well, I want to offer a very heartfelt apology to society and the media”.
Although the judge could not be suspended from his post, however, he is facing possible impeachment.
